Selecting Full-Sized Door Hinges

Standard door hinges differ significantly from cabinet hinges. Weight capacity, size, and material are the primary considerations.

Sizing

Standard interior doors use 3.5" x 3.5" hinges. Exterior doors typically use 4" x 4" with ball bearings. Measure door thickness — 1-3/8" and 1-3/4" are the most common sizes.

Weight Ratings

Standard hinges: up to 100 lbs per door. Heavy-duty hinges: 100-300 lbs. Extra-heavy-duty: 300+ lbs for oversized and commercial doors. Use 3 hinges for doors under 7', 4 hinges for taller doors.

Materials & Finishes

Steel: most common, affordable. Stainless steel: corrosion-resistant for exterior use. Brass: decorative, tarnish-resistant. Bronze: traditional look, durable. Match the finish to your door hardware for a cohesive look.
